If you are an innovative thinker with a positive attitude and a commitment to quality, we want you to help us make St. John’s a city where people want to live and feel they belong.The OpportunityThe Human Resources Division is presently accepting applications for the Permanent position of Water Treatment Maintenance Operator with the Department of Public Works.AccountabilitiesUnder the direction of the Supervisor, Water Treatment, the following duties apply to the Windsor Lake Water Treatment Plant, Petty Harbour Long Pond Water Treatment Plant, pumping stations, meter stations, emergency diesel power systems, water reservoirs, valve chambers and other associated facilities.

  • Monitor, evaluate and adjust water treatment processes.
  • Collect samples, interpret water analysis and compare with Canadian Drinking Water

Quality Guidelines.

  • Perform plant process control laboratory analysis.
  • Evaluate characteristics of source water.
  • Operate, maintain and repair equipment such as gas chlorinators, various water pumps,

electro-pneumatic equipment, mechanical screens, pressure reducing valves, air
compressors, vacuum pumps, fans, shafts, mechanical couplings, mechanical drives,
diesel engines, valves, piping, mechanical seals, and hot water heating systems.

  • Perform preventative maintenance programs on plant equipment.
  • Safely use and maintain shop tools and equipment and comply with all health and safety

regulations.

  • Carry out inspections and keep records of operations and monitor activities in the

protected watershed.

  • Investigate water quality complaints by the public.
  • Perform housekeeping duties of all water facilities.
  • Perform security, safety and administrative procedures.

The above statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the job.QualificationsGraduation from high school supplemented by the successful completion of a Journeyman Certificate as a Millwright, Industrial Electrician, or Instrumentation and Control Technician, and have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in this field. The successful applicant must also possess a minimum of Level III certification in Water Treatment Operations. Appointments may be made of an applicant who possesses a certificate lower than Level III in Water Treatment Operations provided they can meet the Provincial requirements to obtain a Level III certificate in Water Treatment Plant Operations.Applicants must possess a strong mechanical aptitude and be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform maintenance and repairs to various water treatment equipment such as those described above. The City’s selection procedure may include testing and does include a requirement that the successful candidate pass a medical and physical assessment.
