We actively work towards creating a campus community free of sexual violence and operate from a feminist, anti-oppressive, intersectional, trauma-informed, and person-centered framework. We believe all survivors and the experiences of all individuals who have faced sexual or gender-based violence. All services are free of charge and available to people of all genders, sexualities, and backgrounds.PositionThe Volunteer Program Coordinator is accountable for the delivery of programming that promotes student engagement, student retention, and wellness in members of the University community who have experienced sexual assault or abuse, sexual harassment, stalking, relationship violence, and other experiences of sexual violence. The Volunteer Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the operations of the UASAC Volunteer Program, which includes developing and overseeing a training and management infrastructure for Volunteers.The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for helping to promote student engagement and fostering social responsibility by way of managing the Volunteer Program and supervising individual Volunteers. In this capacity, they will recruit, interview, train, and mentor a team of 20-30 Volunteers on an annual basis. This involves developing effective recruitment and interview tools to aid in the selection process and making staffing decisions with minimal input from other colleagues. After Volunteers are chosen, the Volunteer Program Coordinator will create and revise digital and interactive volunteer training materials to ensure the cohort is educated in line with best practices in the provision of peer support. These training materials are implemented in our annual Volunteer Training which is primarily facilitated by the Volunteer Program Coordinator.Throughout the academic year, the Volunteer Program Coordinator will continue to monitor the supportive practices and emotional well-being of volunteers, providing consistent mentorship and support on an individual basis as needed, and arranging for additional training opportunities to keep volunteers engaged. Further, the Volunteer Program Coordinator is responsible for the creation and maintenance of procedural documents related to the overall functioning of the Volunteer Program. The volunteer coordinator will also support the Drop-In Supports program, by providing as-needed crisis intervention to survivors accessing the Centre. This involves responding to, assessing, and addressing disclosures of sexual and gender-based violence experienced by members of the campus community. This could involve the performance of risk assessments for harm to self or others, psychoeducational support, acting as an advocate or referral point for clients navigating complex systems and processes, and providing accompaniment to medical and reporting services on- and off-campus.Duties
- Works to develop volunteer programs and initiatives that engage volunteers and promote outreach, awareness, and further support for survivors of sexual and/or gender-based violence in our campus community.
- Recruits, selects, trains, and manages volunteers for both a peer support and outreach program for creating campus awareness.
- Oversees, and is accountable for the provision of effective crisis intervention peer support provided by, 25-40 Volunteers on an annual basis.
- Provides specialized crisis intervention support; ongoing emotional stabilization and therapeutic bridging; and sexual assault-specific information and resources to individuals who have been affected by sexual violence, including extensive follow-up sessions, through a variety of mediums (in-person, virtual, phone, email, text, and chat).
Minimum Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in a related field and completion of a comprehensive sexual violence crisis intervention support training program are required; consideration may also be given to other combinations of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of anti-sexual violence advocacy, sexual and gender-based violence response and prevention, crisis intervention support, and suicide intervention.
- Experience/knowledge managing volunteers or staff
- Experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to individuals who are LGBTQ2SIA+, racialized, experiencing disabilities, and/or navigating other intersections of socially marginalized identities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to synthesize and conceptualize complex situations and use appropriate judgment.
- High level of critical thinking, analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to deal with diverse issues, multi-task, and prioritize.
- Experience supervising and mentoring a team of volunteers.
- Program planning, implementation, and evaluation skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals of various backgrounds and experiences, including administrators, faculty, professionals, students, and community members.
- Previous experience managing volunteers or staff.
- Strong knowledge of the University environment and student life, including relevant policies and procedures (the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy and Procedure; the Discrimination, Harassment, and Duty to Accommodation Policy and Procedures; the Helping Individuals at Risk Policy and Procedure; the Student Conduct Policy; staff and faculty collective agreements; FOIPP; etc).
- Knowledge of a wide variety of resources on campus and in the community.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, and formal facilitation experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate sensitive material.
