- Act as the intermediary between the RCMP, who recommends charges and Crown Counsel, both Provincial and Federal, who approve charges and prosecute the offence.
- Coordinate and interact with Provincial and Federal Crown Counsel, BC Corrections and Parole, the Court Registry, Sheriff Department, legal advocates, Victim Services, the Protection Order Registry and other police agencies, both Provincial and Federal on behalf of the RCMP.
- Screen RTCC’s for completeness of information and quality assurance. Process all documentation between the Detachment and both Crown Counsel and the Court Registry.
- Ensure overnight in custody cases are completed prior to court and arrange for transport of offender.
- Facilitate any Crown Counsel/RCMP/Liaison and/or discussion on a particular case/issue. Maintain close liaison with court official in charge of witness services including the notification and denotification of all members.
- Ensure dates where investing members who are unavailable for court are recorded on the court database.
- As a Special Provincial Constable, swear court informations before a Justice of the Peace.
- Responsible for distribution of all court documentation to ensure appropriate action. Compile and maintain all records of charges, stay of proceedings, and case dismissals both on hardcopy files and in the PRIME capactiy.
- Submittal fingerprint and individual data to Ottawa through Intellibook upon charge approval. Maintain court dispositions in record management system and submit results to Ottawa t
- Act as the DNA Coordinator, monitoring and assessing overall DNA Court Order processes at the Merritt RCMP Detachment.
- Provide backup duties to the Exhibit Custodian role.
Supervision and Leadership
- Coordinates and supervises the work activities, safety, and quality of work of the municipal employees (ME) in Clerk positions at the Merritt RCMP detachment.
- Provides municipal employees in Clerk positions at the Merritt RCMP detachment with orientation, work instruction, information and guidance when necessary.
- Identifies and provides on-the job instruction, training, and development as required.
- Makes formal recommendations regarding staff and developmental needs.
- May assist in hiring of employees.
- Establish work schedules and procedures and co-ordinate activities with other work units and departments as required.
- Ensures work standards are followed and maintained, provides feedback, and resolves work-related problems. Escalates issues to the Manager as appropriate.
- Ensures appropriate workplace health and safety protocols are followed by all staff under their supervision, ensures training as appropriate, PPE and other aspects of the OHS Program and WorkSafeBC regulations are properly administered.
Qualifications
- Post secondary course work in office administration, criminology or a related field supplemented by recent related operational experience in police field work and court proceedings including working knowledge of Criminal Justice System and experience working with police records, court procedures.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Experience in an information management environment, identifying deficiencies and providing solutions pertaining to records management.
- Ability to work competently in an office environment with office equipment including faxes, Microsoft Word and email. Experience working with JUSTIN and/or PRIME are assets.
- Ability to transcribe statements at a minimum 50wpm.
- Ability to execute tasks efficiently demonstrating good judgement.
- Communication and interpersonal skills to work with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with policies and procedures.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a supervisory role.
- A valid BC Class 5 drivers license.
The ability to obtain and maintain RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance is a condition of employment.This position requires 37.5 hours per week.Additional InformationThis position is within the CUPE local bargaining unit with a wage of $37.25 per hour (2024 rate).
