The Residence Life and Education team recruits, trains, and supports 190 student staff members who live and work in the residence communities.Position SummaryThe Supervisor, Residence Life – Community Support supervises the full-time Coordinators, Residence Care and Coordinators, Residence Community Management, supervises interns, and oversees the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) program with University of Alberta Protective Services. Together these staff make up the Community Support Team. The Supervisor, Residence Life – Community Support also is responsible for monitoring outcome-focused residence plans, monitoring of all student discipline in residence, coordinating the support of at-risk students, developing and analyzing relevant statistics and coordinating communication with key internal and University stakeholders. They also are responsible for overseeing any health and safety-related special projects occurring in residenceA component of the Supervisor, Residence Life – Community Support’s work will include advising on cases and supporting students experiencing thoughts of suicide or otherwise at risk of harm to themselves. They will also support residents impacted by sexual violence by managing the triage of cases to the Dean of Students’ office for implementation of options under the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy.Duties

  • Supervises and supports the Coordinators, Residence Community Management and Coordinators, Residence Care.
  • Oversight of the day-to-day activities of community management/the residence conduct process. Ensures that restorative justice is the preferred method of dealing with student conduct situations (both at the professional staff level and the student staff level).
  • Oversight of the day-to-day activities of residence student case management, including providing assessment, response, and management for students in distress in an appropriate manner that is consistent with U of A policies and procedures.
  • Works with the Community Support team to establish (a) appropriate goals for the residence community to improve satisfaction, enhance learning and developmental outcomes, and the overall experience (b) plans to realize the goals; and (c) plans to realize the goals of the Residence Services Core Business Operations.
  • Serves as the Residence Life expert and direct contact for the documentation/filing system, Symplicity Advocate. First point of contact for anyone in the department with questions, requests or concerns with Advocate.
  • Works with the Manager, Residence Life and Education to oversee the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) program with the University of Alberta Protective Services.
  • Provides coaching to all Residence Life staff as they work to support students who need enhanced care (i.e. providing resource options, coaching for conversations, etc…)
  • Is knowledgeable of University policies, procedures, and resources to assist students and guide them to appropriate resources if required when meeting one-on-one with students (e.g. Clinical and Counselling Services, filing reports with University of Alberta Protective Services).
  • May be required to act in a stand-by on-call status. Will be compensated as per the NASA Collective Agreement for any time spent on call.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5 years of experience in a university residence setting and/or experience working in a complex and confidential environment; consideration may also be given to other combinations of education and experience.
  • Ability to synthesize and conceptualize complex situations and use appropriate judgment.
  • High level of critical thinking, analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations including but not limited to 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous students, International, and students with disabilities.
  • Excellent emotional regulation skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of suicide intervention, violence prevention, and current trends in early intervention and privacy legislation.
  • An in-depth understanding of student mental health issues and related institutional responses.
  • Proficiency with computers, including the Google suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience using the web-based application Symplicity Advocate.
  • Experience using restorative practices and Restorative Justice principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the various areas within the University community, its policies and procedures (Governance, Student Conduct Policy, UAPPOL, FOIPP, etc.).
  • Experience supervising staff in a unionized environment.
