The Board and its staff embrace continuous learning and innovation and are guided by the following principles: neutrality and objectivity; ethics, integrity and confidentiality; and responsiveness and accountability.If you possess a positive and professional attitude, have strong writing and communication skills, are exceptionally detailed oriented, with the ability to work as a member of a high-energy, results focused team, and are searching for a rewarding career, we have an exciting opportunity for you to explore as a Senior Labour Board Officer.About Our OpportunityAs the Senior Labour Board Officer, you will play an important role in promoting and supporting positive employee and labour relations practices in the Province of Nova Scotia.As Senior Labour Board Officer you will be accountable for efficiently and effectively managing cases adjudicated by the Labour Board in a timely manner in accordance with the Trade Union Act, Labour Standards Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other labour and employment statutes within the jurisdiction of the Labour Board. You will be accountable for serving certification applications, conducting and counting certification votes, as well as conducting interviews on matters involving inclusions and exclusion from bargaining units under the Trade Union Act.The Labour Board must be, and be seen to be, unbiased and have the confidence and trust of the citizens of Nova Scotia to ensure the province has a sound labour and employee relations forum in which to address disputes. As Senior Labour Board Officer, you will be responsible for carrying out all duties in an unbiased, fair and impartial manner that ensures neutrality and supports the highest level of institutional independence required for adjudicative boards. You need to be sensitive to the impact that a positive and stable labour and employee relations setting has on economic and social development in the province.As Senior Labour Board Officer you will report to the Chief Executive Officer, Nova Scotia Labour Board.Primary Accountabilities

  • As Senior Labour Board Officer you will be accountable for efficiently and effectively managing cases adjudicated by the Labour Board in a timely manner in accordance with the Trade Union Act, Labour Standards Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other labour and employment statutes within the jurisdiction of the Labour Board.
  • You will be accountable for providing navigational support to self-represented parties appearing before the Board.
  • You will be accountable for conducting certification votes in-person as well as administering votes conducted by e-vote and by mail-in ballot and counting votes, as well as conducting interviews on matters involving inclusions and exclusion from bargaining units under the Trade Union Act.
  • You will also be accountable for conducting legal research, gathering and analyzing legal and non-legal information, preparing reports and presentations, leading and supporting projects and initiatives of the Board, and conducting outreach/educational sessions for community partner groups.
  • You may also be assigned to perform review officer adjudicative responsibilities in accordance with the duty of fair representation provisions under the Trade Union Act. In carrying out this duty, the incumbent must ensure decisions are made in accordance with rules of procedural fairness and principles of natural justice.

Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right opportunity for you if you have a university degree, preferably a law degree, and 3 years’ experience in case management. Or an equivalent combination of education, work experience and training may be considered.You have knowledge of labour and employment law as well as other workplace laws with a proven ability to analyze issues, facts and evidence in relation to relevant rules of procedures and law. You have a proven ability to weigh evidence and render final, concise and conclusive legal decisions, as well as the ability to conduct legal research and develop coherent research strategies. You possess exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), with strong interpersonal and time management skills, often managing competing priorities.You possess a positive and professional attitude with the ability to work as a member of a high-energy, results focused team. You are exceptionally detailed oriented with the proven ability to handle numerous tasks and critical thinking skills. You have an ability to deal with difficult people in a multi-faceted and stressful environment, communicating with tact and discretion in a clear, concise manner. You are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook). You are comfortable working with confidential/sensitive matters and apply an equity, diversity and inclusion lens to your work, and encourage colleagues to do the same.While not required, it is considered an asset if you have experience with adjudicative boards/courts in labour and employment law.
