This position will play a leadership role in the Willerth Laboratory, and will report directly to Dr. Stephanie Willerth, who is the Principal Investigator of the laboratory. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed subject to work performance and funding availability.SBME is a partnership between the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Applied Science, acting as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. For more information about the School of Biomedical Engineering, please visit .The Willerth Lab at SBME/UVic ( ) is an interdisciplinary team that seeks to engineer a variety of neural tissue types from pluripotent stem cells using various strategies.ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will provide oversight on scientific and training aspects of the lab while leading their own scientific projects.The responsibilities of the position depend on the skills and research interests of the successful applicant. Specific tasks for this position may include:

  • Managing and running projects related to retinal tissue engineering and assisting with the designing and implementation of new research projects;
  • Designing and performing experiments, analyzing results, and presenting findings;
  • Overseeing and leading trainees within projects;
  • Analyzing data and presenting the data in reports, publications, and presentations;
  • Preparing grants and assist with grant applications and reporting, publication preparation, and with fulfilling regulatory requirements (animal ethics, biosafety etc.);
  • Helping to enhance our collaborative research environment;
  • Training and mentoring lab personnel;
  • Coordinating the maintenance of lab equipment; and
  • Contributing to cutting-edge knowledge in the scientific community.

QualificationsPhD in retinal tissue engineering, with a focus on outer-retina cell-based therapeutics development.5+ years of experience in leading in vitro PSC-derived retinal graft production studies and in vivo large-animal retinal transplantation studies.5+ years of experience in university-startup/spin-off founding, fundraising, and technology transfer.5+ years of experience in establishing (including recruitment and fundraising), leading, and supervising medium-size (~8-13) academic research teams at accredited Canadian universities.Supervision receivedThe incumbent will receive supervision directly from Dr. Willerth.Supervision givenThe incumbent may be required to supervise trainees involved in the research program.Start date and stipendThe start date is October 01, 2024 but flexible; funding has already been received.
