Job description: Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.Position Overview:The Research Assistant (RA) will work with online digital archives and assist with collecting and organizing archival sources in a database that the RA will create and maintain. The sources in question are parish records that contain baptism, marriage, and death registries from the seventeenth century, starting with the island of Faial (Azores Archipelago). Once the gathering and organizing of those archival sources is complete, the RA will be trained in palaeography and assist with the deciphering of those records.Duties:

  • Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation
  • Assist with duties related to the production of articles, publications, reports and presentations
  • Prepare literature reviews
  • Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities

Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to history students, and particularly to students who have taken courses in pre-modern Europe such as Children and Childhood in Pre-Modern Europe or Slaves, Serfs, and Servants in Pre-Modern Europe.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who can read Spanish or Portuguese, or are willing to learn to read manuscript sources from the seventeenth century written in one of those languages.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
