Job description: Regional Biologist, Dawson CityThis is a full time, permanent position, working 75 hours bi-weekly. The Eligibility list from this competition may be used to staff similar or identical positions within a Yukon community; however, it will not be used to staff Whitehorse based positions.Environment – who we areAt the Department of Environment, we strive to ensure that the quality of Yukon’s environment is maintained for present and future generations. The Fish and Wildlife Branch manages Yukon’s fish and wildlife populations and their habitats for the conservation, appreciation, and sustainable use through a team approach and in a manner that is collaborative and adaptive.Who we’re looking forThe successful candidate will work with co-management bodies (First Nations, Renewable Resources Councils), and collaborate with Branch programs, planning groups, users and the public. The primary management focus of the position is wildlife species that are locally harvested, including but not limited to moose, northern mountain caribou, sheep, bears, and wolves. You will be a key member in the Department of Environment’s land planning and environmental assessment teams. - A degree in biology, ecology, or related discipline.
- Considerable professional-level experience leading biological field studies with a focus on terrestrial wildlife (e.g., procurement, budget and contract management, staff and contractor management and coordination, data collection and quality assurance, etc.)..
- Experience interpreting biological data for the purposes of informing wildlife management (e.g., harvest scenarios, indicators of population stability, etc.)
- Significant experience with ESRI GIS software including an ability to produce and interpret GIS products from a range of geospatial data sources.
- Experience providing technical advice for a wide range of audiences to support wildlife and habitat management processes (e.g., environmental assessments, land-use planning initiatives, and wildlife harvest management).
- Experience leading consultations or engagements with First Nations governments, co-management boards and councils, and public bodies.
Assets or skill sets you can bring to the position include:
- Experience supervising or leading staff
- Familiarity with Yukon First Nation Final Agreements
- Experience interpreting and applying resource management legislation (e.g., mining, forestry, hunting/fishing Acts and regulations.)
- Experience working with ungulate populations, apex predators, and their habitats

- Ability to work autonomously.
