Job description: 15 Month Term Assignment with consideration for a Temporary AssignmentThe Water Resources Branch, Department of Environment has a diverse mandate, working with our partners to protect water for the environment and Yukoners. An important aim of the Branch is to support and promote the long-term health of Yukon’s waters through strategic planning and policy.An emphasis for the next year will be providing strategic and operational policy support in advancing branch priorities. This includes supporting work on:

  • Leading the implementation of bilateral water management agreements with First Nation governments and neighbouring jurisdictions; and
  • Working with transboundary partners to coordinate the process of developing learning plans for both the Liard and Peel rivers, working with both Indigenous Knowledge Systems and western science.
  • Supporting the advancement of our evolving groundwater program;
  • Providing support to advance our flood program, the Yukon lake monitoring initiative, and water-focused youth education programs.
  • Supporting the branch in advancement of relationship building and understanding Indigenous Ways of Knowing.

Activities that support this work include representing the branch and Yukon Government on a variety of interdepartmental, regional and national committees, conducting community, First Nation and youth outreach, writing and reviewing policy documents, preparing planning and communication materials, and cross-government collaboration.   • A post-secondary degree related to natural resources management, political science, environmental science, geography, public administration or a related discipline;
  • Experience conducting policy research and analysis, preferably in a government setting;
  • Experience writing and reviewing policy documents, such as option papers and briefing notes
  • Experience in public engagement or consultation processes;
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-jurisdictional environment;
  • Experience in program planning and/or development, preferably related to water resource management; and,
  • Experience working with Yukon First Nations or transboundary Indigenous organizations.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered.Desired Knowledge, Skills and SuitabilityCandidates should have and will be assessed on:

  • Ability to present water management issues to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Ability to think strategically;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external partners;
  • Proven ability to conduct policy research, analyze information and draft decision making documents;
  • Experience leading change and innovation;
  • Ability to plan, manage and implement projects and;
  • Working knowledge of water resource management in a northern context.
  • Experience working respectfully with Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Holders.

Additional Information:Job Requirements: The incumbent will be required to travel within and outside the Yukon.
