This position reports to the Program Manager – ABI and is part of an inter-professional team. Physiotherapists on the team, work in close collaboration with other team members to provide a diverse range of interventions to patients and their families. The goals of the Early Supported Stroke Discharge Team are to provide care for recently discharged, community dwelling patients who require ongoing stroke rehabilitation in order to remain living in their community.The Physiotherapist assesses, diagnoses and treats patients in community and tertiary care setting who present with actual or potential impairment, pain, functional limitations or disabilities. Physiotherapy assessment involves obtaining a detailed medical history, performing specific and standardized tests and evaluation procedures to determine a physical diagnosis. Holistic treatment programs are developed using exercises, education, and manual, mechanical, electrical and hydrotherapy techniques to assist the patient in regaining and/or maintaining an optimal level of function. The physiotherapist educated and communicated with other health disciplines, the general public, family members and caregivers with regard to health promotion, physiotherapy treatment and patient management. The physiotherapist provides supervision and evaluation of physiotherapy students and supervision of physiotherapy assistants and aides. The physiotherapist reports to a Program Manager and as a member of a clinical team, the physiotherapist collaborates with colleagues to determine team goals and objectives, participates in the evaluation of team effectiveness, and solves problems and shares responsibilities. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are required. Physiotherapists work on weekends in many areas of the hospital.Physiotherapists may be required to provide coverage to other areas within the Rehabilitation portfolio.About YouWe would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy from an accredited university
  • Membership with the Nova Scotia College or Physiotherapists (Provincial licensing body)
  • Computer skills (statistics input, word processing, Microsoft Outlook
  • Annual Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation certification (BCLS)
  • Annual Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training and certification. (WHMIS)
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Willingness to participate in the development of the Early Supported Stroke Discharge Team and community-based programs
  • Willingness to work within a collaborative inter-professional context
  • Willingness and ability to travel and see patients potentially within a variety of settings within the Central Zone catchment area
  • Must have valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle preferred
  • Willingness to use personal vehicle for work purposes and to inform insurer of same
