Job Summary:
The Installation Technician will physically install exhibitions and artwork in various locations, assist with the physical movement of the permanent collection, provide technical assistance, and perform other facility duties as required.Responsibilities:
Exhibitions: * To physically install exhibition installations:
- Responsible for the coordination, production and execution required to install temporary exhibitions, installations, exhibits from the permanent collection and special projects including public artworks,
- Liaises with Director/Curator, Head of Collections, guest curators and artists to identify needs, design, and layouts regarding display of exhibitions,
- Identifies, sources, and maintains an inventory and storage of materials, equipment and supplies for exhibitions including AV equipment, lighting, and hardware,
- Responsible for installing and removing exhibition signage,
- Responsible for packing, unpacking, lifting, and crating of artworks in the context of exhibition installations and de-installations,
- Patches and paints walls and exhibition furniture,
- Conducts lighting in consultation with the Director/Curator and/or designate,
- Designs and fabricates display furniture and hardware as required.
Collections: * To assist Head of Collections with collection procedures:
- Perform handling, storage and preparation of art works assigned to racking/shelving,
- Assist with shipping, packing, crating, storage of loans to/from host galleries,
- Prepare artworks for review by Collections Committee,
- Assist with the care and conservation of artworks including matting and framing works for display,
- Assists in the maintenance of the public art collection off-site,
- Other tasks as assigned by Director/ Curator.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Secondary School graduation diploma or equivalent as determined by the Corporation,
- Comfortable working alone with minimal supervision,
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
Preferred:
- Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED certification,
- Excellent organizational and time management skills,
- Ladder Safety Training,
- Have demonstrated experience in correctly handling, installing, crating and moving art,
- Practical and technical skills such as carpentry, maintenance, and painting,
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements for safe building practices and correct lifting techniques,
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are considered an asset,
- Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Fine Arts, Visual Arts or other related field of study is considered an asset,
- Experience working in an art gallery/ museum is considered an asset.
Working Conditions:
- Flexible hours reflecting the exhibition schedule, some weekend / evening work as required.
- Hours of work will not exceed forty-eight (48) hours in a two-week period in accordance with the C.U.P.E., Local 1146 – Inside Part-time Unit collective agreement.
- Physically demanding work requiring lifting/handling large heavy wooden crates/structures/materials/equipment, handling large works of art, climbing ladders, moving plinths, lights and frames, handling large packing materials.
- Working in a dusty workshop environment. Working in contact with conservation equipment, contact with fur, feathers, textiles and chemicals when necessary.
- Nature of work results in frequent interruptions.
