Job description: Accessibility Services, within the Department of Student Affairs, provides academic accommodations to students with a documented temporary, prolonged, or permanent disability and is seeking an Access Advisor/Adaptive Technologist for a one-year term position.RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide training on, and access to, assistive technology to support learning
- Educate and train students, staff, and faculty on adaptive technologies
- Advise and support students with documented accommodations on technology supports, both in selecting appropriate technology, learning how to use technology, and how to access and incorporate adaptive technology into their academic career
- Provide accessibility advising directly to students and manage a case load of assigned students
- Meet with individual students and their families to identify functional limitations and educational needs to develop individualized accommodation plans for students with disabilities and make recommendations for adaptive technology, as needed
- Review and interpret psycho-educational and other professional documentation as related to a successful university experience
- Assist students in gaining financial support of the Canada Study Grant and other bursaries surrounding accessibility and adaptive technology
- Develop and maintain working relationships with faculty and administrative personnel across campus, serving, as a resource for faculty and staff as they work to meet the academic needs of students with disabilities
- Help students, faculty, and staff understand the Duty to Accommodate and how it applies in the Post Secondary setting and help operationalize documented accommodations for students in their current educational context
- Consult with individual faculty as they implement accommodations and support students with varying needs and collaborate to promote classroom strategies associated with accessibility
- Maintain confidential case records, relevant statistical data and required reporting information
- Perform other responsibilities as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a Bachelor of Education or recognized post-secondary program in a related program or discipline
- Be familiar with various forms of note-taking options; accessibility features of software, programs and devices; and text-to-speech/speech-to-text options
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of adaptive technology supports for reading, writing, studying, time management, organization, test taking, math, note taking and habit formation
- Demonstrated understanding of legal Duty to Accommodate in Post-Secondary Educational settings
- Working knowledge and demonstrated competency with computers, various office software programs, and adaptive technology
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and oral and written English communication skills, with demonstrated proficiency with grammar and composition
- Demonstrated lived experience as, or experience working with, those who have lived experience in diverse equity deserving groups
- Ability to demonstrate and maintain high level of confidentiality, diplomacy and judgement with strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks amid changing priorities and actively problem-solve and take initiative where appropriate
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work effectively with others while meeting deadlines
- A candidate who enhances the diversity of the Accessibility Services team would be an asset
