  • Supervise, train and evaluate mechanics and service staff to enhance performance and ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Facilitate ongoing training in new equipment, safety procedures, and industry best practices, while mentoring staff to support their career advancement.
  • Oversee daily maintenance and repair operations to ensure optimal efficiency and timely task completion. Prioritize and assign work based on staff expertise, monitor adherence to preventive maintenance schedules, and ensure quality control through inspections.
  • Monitor compliance with regulatory standards, conduct regular safety inspections, and investigate incidents. Maintain accurate safety documentation and ensure staff adherence to safety policies.
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed, parts used, and staff hours. Prepare reports for the Maintenance Superintendent on vehicle availability, shop productivity, and safety compliance.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, coordinating repairs and overseeing utility staff in cleaning and preparing vehicles for service. Maintain accurate records of parts and materials used, and collaborate with the Parts and Stores Section to ensure adequate stock levels.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Planner to efficiently schedule maintenance tasks and develop long-term maintenance plans aligned with operational goals. Liaise with the Fleet and Maintenance Manager and Superintendent to plan major repairs, upgrades, or overhauls.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and minimize repair costs while ensuring cost-effective use of materials and tools. Assist in managing the shop’s operational budget and provide input on cost-saving initiatives.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the shop floor and Maintenance leadership, fostering clear communication for continuity in repairs and services. Collaborate with other Supervisors and Sections on vehicle availability and schedules, and coordinate with vendors for timely delivery of parts and services.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance safety, operations, and vehicle uptime, while adapting the shop to technological advancements and changes in fleet composition.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Superintendent or Fleet and Maintenance Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the fleet maintenance department.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Journeyman Motor Vehicle Mechanical Repair, Truck and Transport Mechanic and/or Heavy-Duty Mechanic Certificate.
  • Seven to nine years’ applicable trade experience related to maintenance work on a transit fleet, including experience with computer-based fleet management systems and supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5A Driver’s Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in transit vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and develop maintenance staff and to make efficient use of equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Windows-based software and fleet management programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal courteously and effectively with subordinates, civic employees, the public and suppliers.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties
