Job description: November 20, 2024MARINE GEOMATICS\ REMOTE OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGISTSchool of Ocean Technology, Centre for Applied Ocean TechnologyMarine Institute(Contractual Position to August 31, 2025)The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is North America’s most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response and technology transfer in support of oceans industries.The Marine Institute was recently awarded multi-year funding in support of monitoring of NL marine protected areas and marine refuges. The program is multifaceted with extensive field activity including fisheries sampling, ocean/ water column monitoring, seafloor mapping/ habitat delineation and includes ROV operations and seafloor photography. The candidate will work with a dynamic team of project scientists, technicians and the project manager within the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) and the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec). The position will be based out of Holyrood at the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s ocean access facility, The Launch.DUTIESThe successful applicant will work as part of a team responsible for applied research in ocean mapping. Duties include mobilization, operation and trouble-shooting of ocean mapping equipment and associated technologies as part of at-sea surveys, processing and analysis of sounder (multibeam and single-beam) and sonar (sidescan and sub-bottom profiler) and other remote sensing data and performing other related duties as required. The successful applicant, with the support from the CTec technical team, will ensure that all sensors and associated instrumentation are calibrated and maintained to specification and will be responsible for project data management, including the integration of new and existing data into the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS). This position will involve working at sea for extended periods. The position will be based at MI’s Holyrood ocean technology facility, The Launch.QUALIFICATIONSExperience (3-5 years) in marine survey; graduation with a diploma or under-graduate degree in ocean mapping, GIS, geomatics, remote sensing or remote vehicle operation; an equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered. Knowledge of sonar data acquisition and processing tools (CarisHIPS/SIPS) and ArcGIS is required. Possession of a valid Class 5 drivers licence as issued by the province Newfoundland and Labrador is also required. Possession of a valid MED A1certificate or higher is an asset.SALARY: $65,320 to $84,824 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel V, NAPE Local 7405)CLOSING DATE: December 4, 2024
