  • Provide instructions to students, which may include explaining and demonstrating concepts and procedures, and clarifying subject areas;
  • Assist the students with lab activities and procedures; may help with the setting up, testing, dismantling, and storing of lab equipment and/or materials;
  • Monitor the condition of the learning environment, ensuring that all relevant protocols, such as health and safety are followed;
  • Maintain records; assist in the reproduction of tests, organize course materials, etc.;
  • May assist with proctoring/invigilating tests, exams and quizzes;
  • May grade student work (assignments, tests, exams, lab results, etc.) using specific guidelines/answer keys provided by the Immediate Supervisor;
  • May provide consultation and feedback to students on coursework, quality of materials submitted for grading, and other similar matters;
  • Attend training related to the assigned duties and responsibilities (e.g. WHMIS training, first aid training, etc.);
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of academic studies and/or relevant experience appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Normally an undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg who has successfully completed a minimum of 30 credit hours.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, marking guides, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with students.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Applicants must have completed BIOL-2301 with a minimum grade of B+.
  • Preference will be given to those with previous marking and/or demonstrating experience.
  • Current students or recent graduates may be given priority for positions.
  • Please indicate course(s) and date(s) for any prior positions held with the University of Winnipeg.

  • Applicants may be considered for multiple sections.
  • Demonstrators will be required to arrive 15-30 minutes prior to the start of labs for setup and to stay until cleanup is complete.
  • Demonstrators will mark assignments consisting of data analysis and short answer questions and/or shorter written assignments which will be graded through Nexus and completed within one week of their submission.
  • Note: bench labs will run on a variable schedule on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 1:00-3:45.
