For more information on diversity and inclusion, please visit:The Indigenous Policing Unit was created to work with Indigenous policing stakeholders, to ensure indigenous communities are provided adequate and effective policing.For more information about the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services, please visitRole ResponsibilitiesWorking closely with the Director, the Indigenous Policing Coordinator will be responsible and accountable to ensure effective, efficient, and culturally sensitive policing services are provided to meet the terms and conditions outlined within numerous policing agreements.The position requires developing and maintaining open communication between various departments within the Government of Alberta, Government of Canada, Indigenous Governments, police services and governing bodies.Other duties include:
- Providing support for the First Nations communities and Metis Settlements.
- Providing guidance to various policing bodies so they can identify and track policing priorities.
- Managing agency budget to ensure agreement compliance.
- Providing conflict management between various First Nations and Police Groups.
In this role you must be comfortable:
- Working collaboratively with indigenous communities and law enforcement.
- Engaging with stakeholders at varying levels.
- Travelling around the province to different First Nations communities.

QualificationsMinimum Requirement Standards:
- University graduation in related field such as Indigenous Studies, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field plus 4 years related experience.
- A class 5 or higher driver’s license if required.
Equivalencies considered based on one-year experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.Working knowledge in the following areas would be considered an asset:
- First Nation treaties and associated traditional laws.
- Alberta Police Act, Peace Offer Act and the Indian Act.
- Metis Settlement and General Council Structure.
- First Nations and Inuit Policing Program.
- First Nation and RCMP Policing models.
- Provincial Police Agreement.

- This position is based out of Edmonton.
- Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (full time)
- May be required to work outside of normal office hours.
- 25 to 30% to various locations within Alberta, some of which may be isolated.
