The range of services provided by the units within the OREM appear at every point in the student life cycle, beginning with recruitment and admissions, all the way through to convocation. Members of the OREM team strive to be consistent in their interpretation, communication and application of regulations, policies and procedures while being both professional and respectful of the diversity and complexity of needs across the university campus. The OREM interacts with staff, students, faculty, university and external community members in order to assist in the delivery of core services that cross operational and departmental boundaries (e.g., registration, class and exam scheduling). The salary range for this position is:Recruitment range: $69,052- $76,129 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $89,791 is available through annual performance increases.Job SummaryThe Indigenous Academic Advising Consultant (IAAC) is a senior position within the Academic Advising Centre that reports to the Manager Students. As a member of the academic advising team, the IAAC provides specialist advice related to academic advising and academic planning for Indigenous Students. The IAAC collaborates with the Office of Student Life (OSL), Centre for Accessible Learning, Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE) and the Tri-Faculty Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator to provide specialist advice and services related to academic advising and Indigenous students for the Academic Advising Centre, the Faculties of Humanities, Science and Social Sciences, as well as units in Student Affairs. Collaborating with the Academic Advising Consultant, Training, the IAAC also provides leadership within the Academic Advising Centre for professional staff training and development related to the practice of advising Indigenous students. The IAAC also provides advice and support for the Manager Students, Coordinator Academics, Manager SEAMS, Director, and Associate Dean, Academic Advising.The Indigenous Academic Advising Consultant enhances student success and retention by:(a) advising and mentoring Indigenous students who are enrolled in programs in Humanities, Science and Social Sciences;(b) helping students identify and understand their options to make informed decisions;(c) providing critical academic planning support and coordination for students with complex academic advising needs;(d) providing expertise, consultation and advice in the management of complex student matters which may include assisting students in significant distress or students experiencing trauma to understand their options as they related to academic advising; and(e) collaborating with OSL and the AAC triage team to support the implementation of an effective case management process as it relates to academic advising practices for Indigenous students, in alignment with various university policies, practices and strategic plans.This position is expected to support the management of highly-complex and potentially volatile situations as they relate to academic advising of Indigenous students, including working with students in trauma. Of critical importance to this position is an intimate knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Cultural competency, including an in-depth understanding of colonization, decolonization, land issues, cultural protocols, and Indigenous/settler relationships is essential.In addition to advising Indigenous students, the IAAC engages in a broader advising practice, as well as training and professional development related to academic advising to ensure advising knowledge remains current and that there is an opportunity to develop and maintain a high level of academic advising content expertise for the portfolio. This includes responsibility for a portfolio of related administration (e.g. processing RDPs) and for providing advising appointments and support (in-person and/or virtually and/or by email).Because of the nature of the duties and responsibilities of this position, occasional evening and weekend work may be required.Job RequirementsThis position requires a degree and at least 3 years of progressive experience in a university administrative environment and/or in Indigenous communities/organizations with knowledge of undergraduate advising service delivery and academic programs or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 2 years related experience in a post-secondary setting, with demonstrated background in students support, engagement and satisfaction. Expert knowledge of applications of student record systems (i.e. Banner Student Information System, CAPP, TCS) to advising function is an advantage.Proven ability to think strategically and work collaboratively. This position requires superior communications skills to convey complex concepts within academic advising as it relates to academic programs. Discernment is required as information can be highly confidential and sensitive related to student records. This position influences decision-making in an open and positive manner and may support others in resolving conflicts and crises.Requirements include knowledge of:

  • Cultural knowledge in Coast Salish protocols.
  • Cultural awareness of the Indigenous peoples and familiarity with Indigenous communities and the issues they face with regards to the public post-secondary education system.
  • Challenges, opportunities and advances in Indigenous Education in Canada and internationally.
  • Implementation of Indigenous worldviews within an academic environment.
  • Indigenous laws, historical perspectives, and challenges specific to Indigenous students and communities.
  • Project management best practices.

In addition, this position requires:
