The Health & Safety Specialist will support compliance of the Incident Management System by educating all employees with responsibilities in the incident management process. The position will provide support, leadership and direction in accident investigation, job safety analysis, work observations, hazard recognition, and hazard control.MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical expertise and educational support and subject matter expertise in the area of accident investigation, root cause analysis, and hazard control
- Provide consultation and decision making on complex incidents or activities and escalate inquiries
- Monitor investigations, hazard control, and inspection activities for effectiveness and regulatory compliance
- Provide support to managers with assessments of workspace, job tasks, work processes, and products/equipment to identify hazards/risk and provide recommendation on legislation requirements and control measures
- Administer internal health and safety consultation services to managers and supervisors
- Monitor the IRS and make recommendations for improvement
- Act as a resource for all levels of employees within the organization, including the workplace health and safety committees
- Support management with auditing of health and safety processes (eg. Intelex / Observations)
- Lead, coordinate, and participate in the auditing of the health and safety programs
- Provide leadership, guidance, and recommendation to management with hazard identification, assessing risk, and implementing controls using the hierarchy of controls when implementing appropriate control measures/ corrective action
- Follow best practice and legislative requirements as they relate to ensuring compliance and identifying and controlling hazards in the workplace
- Provide training on the electronic Incident Management Reporting system, as it relates to hazard reports, accident investigations, work observations, workplace inspections, daily management of incident tracking
- Train and educate employees on roles and responsibilities under the Canada Labour Code and the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
REQUIREMENTS:
- University Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent combination of education and experience is required
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional Designation (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation is an asset
- 3-5 years’ experience in Safety Management Systems including hazard identification, assessment and control
- Experience in an industrial and/or rail industry
- Experience with developing and delivering health and safety educational material in a group setting
- In-depth knowledge of provincial and federal health and safety legislation: Canada Labour Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Railway Safety Act, and relevant codes and standards, such as CSA, ANSI, ISO, Building Code, and National Fire Code
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills with experience in Incident Management software and Microsoft Office 365
- Attention to detail, excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
- Proven ability to manage time in a deadline-oriented environment
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision
