Job description: Two afternoons per week (12:30 – 2:20 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays OR 1:00 – 3:00 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays)Location of CourseThe University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave., room to be determined; In-person hybrid deliveryStipend$2,411 – $2,879 (*refer to Pg. 44 of PSAC Collective Agreement: )Course Overview:The purpose of this high-intermediate to advanced course is to help students improve their listening and speaking skills. Students will improve their fluency and apply strategies to improve communicational and listening abilities. Pronunciation will be taught when necessary. Listening materials may be taken from a variety of sources, including internet, textbooks, music, television, radio and podcasts. Students will be exposed to presentation and/or debating skills but it’s not limited to. Skill focus: communication skills, speaking, listeningResponsibilities:

  • Course Preparation and Outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / Lecture preparation
  • Attendance Management
  • Teaching
  • Tracking progress of students studying through different modes both in class and through alternate delivery
  • Student Contact
  • Participation in teacher-student events, activities, staff meetings and end of term ceremony
  • Preparation and invigilation of examinations
  • Marking and grading
  • Maintenance of class Nexus pages
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • TESL Canada certified TESL or CELTA required
  • Minimum of 800 hours of experience instructing listening skills and strategies for comprehension
  • Minimum of 800 hours of experience teaching basic debating and conversational skills
  • Experience teaching presentation skills.
  • Extensive familiarity with authentic listening materials
  • Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
  • Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
  • Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
  • Familiarity with different English accents
  • Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in learners
  • Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students.
  • Experience incorporating technology in teaching
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
  • Varied teaching experience considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching.
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
