Job description: Reporting to the Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Science, the Diversity and Equity Assessment (DEA) Program Officer will support the deployment of the various flavors of DEAP across participating units and teams at Dalhousie. The Diversity and Equity Assessment Planning (DEAP) Tool for Researchers (originating from Queen’s University and the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute (https://mcdonaldinstitute.ca/deap-tool-for-researchers/ ) is currently being piloted in the Faculty of Science. The DEAP for researchers Tool is a robust package that supports iterative self-assessment, reflection, and actions by research teams over 14 areas within the research team environment in support of EDIA. Additional existing flavors of DEAP for Academic Units, Administrative Units, (see https://www.queensu.ca/equity/educational-equity/diversity-and-equity-assessment-and-planning-deap-tool ) and Governance units are being piloted in the Faculty of Science. DEAP for instructors, DEAP for student teams, DEAP for staff teams are currently in development. This position is funded by the Canada Research Chairs program, and led by the Faculty of Science in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation, and the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support, including outreach activities, to effectively deploy the DEAP for researchers tool across interested research teams in the Faculty of Science and beyond.
- Create a promising practices database to guide DEAP research teams’ S.M.A.R.T. goal setting exercise.
- Co-develop a climate survey to assess changes in the research team environment.
- Integrate DEAP for researchers into an online platform. Support deployment of the DEAP tool for Academic, Administrative and Governance units, as well as DEAP for Staff teams and DEAP for student teams.
- Integrate the DEAP tool(s) with related platforms including AcheiveIT, the community Equity Data report, and diversity dashboards.
- Conduct analysis and prepare associated reports to track progress.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus, but on occasion remote work is supported.Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to meet operational requirements, with corresponding time off regular work hours.
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree with at least 3 years of research experience.
- Demonstrated ability to support a culture of respect, diversity and inclusion and having knowledge of the barriers and bridges to inclusion, especially in a research environment.
- Knowledge of effective approaches to change management in a post-secondary environment.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Teams etc.), website and database management, and online data collection.
- Must be able to take initiative to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as be able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities and deadlines with excellent prioritization and time management skills.

- Experience using online self-assessment or strategic planning tools (e.g. AchieveIT, DEAP for Academic units)
- Project management experience
- Experience with social science research methods
- Masters/ PhD degree
