Our commitment is to provide the people we serve with programs that maximize progress and independence, support unique strengths and qualities, and encourage integration into the community.This is a 24hr home in Vegreville that provides supports to persons-served at home, through assistance that encourages independent living, in pursuit of their goals, with an active social life in the community.This program is a community-based home that houses four (4) older gentlemen. Our individuals enjoy daily outings for coffee and shopping trips in the community. Staff will transport the individuals in their own vehicle throughout the community daily.The PositionThe Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. Disability Service Workers develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. The individuals provide independent personal care but may require prompting to have baths, teeth/hair brushing and cleanliness. This position reports to the Team Leader. This position requires union membership with CUPE 1099.Previous experience with autism, complex behaviours, and high behaviour supports is an asset.If persons served become escalated, they may express verbal and physical aggression, property damage, sexual innuendos towards staff and require de-escalation support according to their personal behavior support plan.An additional $3.30 per hour will be paid when supporting complex needs clients. This additional amount does not apply to scheduled trainings/meetings and non-complex shifts.Scheduling:
One (1) permanent, part-time position that will work an average of 16-32 hours each week, based upon a 2-week rotation schedule:

  • Week 1 = Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Week 2 = Thursday and Friday

In Your Role You Will

  • Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene
  • Provide supports as per the individual’s care plan
  • Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
  • Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
  • Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

  • MUST HAVE 2 years experience working with individuals with significant mental health concerns, aggressive behaviours and/or trauma.
  • Ability to work well in an environment with potential for aggression/violence.
  • Diploma or Degree – Disability Service Worker, Social Work, Special Education, Health Care Aide, Personal Support Worker or related field.
  • Valid class 5 driver license (or GDL and 3 years Canadian driving experience) with clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle.
  • Clear and current, National Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Current First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification (NVCI or CPI).
  • Training in Trauma Informed Practice, Medication Administration, Suicide Intervention, Behaviour Management, Conflict Resolution, Food Safe.
  • Confident and able to function in a crisis.
  • Ability to perform personal care for clients and handle bodily fluids.
  • Working experience with autism is an asset.
  • Working experience with sign language is an asset.
