Canadian Blood Services is looking for a temporary full-time Coordinator, Research Ethics to join our dynamic Innovation and Portfolio Management team in our Medical Affairs and Innovation division.The Medical Affairs and Innovation division is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by providing oversight for the Centre for Innovation, organ and stem cell donation and transplantation, utilization, donor and clinical services, medical microbiology, and epidemiology. The team ensures that Canadian Blood Services’ medical and scientific support is provided to the ongoing operations of every aspect of their work.Reporting to the Research Services Manager, the Coordinator, Research Ethics, supports the Research Ethics Program’s operation including the Canadian Blood Services Research Ethics Board. In this function, the coordinator is responsible for general administration of the Program and coordination of Program processes.Working as a Coordinator, Research Ethics, provides opportunity to build familiarity with Canadian Blood Services research environment and community. The incumbent will be required to utilize well developed organizational and communication skills and be committed to providing excellent professional customer service.Formula for success

  • Leveraging your skills in project coordination, you will coordinate and facilitate Research Ethics Program applications through all aspects of the review process from submission to final approval/decision.
  • Utilizing your expertise in compliance assessment, you will conduct reviews of assigned submissions to assess for completeness and compliance with Canadian Blood Services Research Ethics Board policies, processes, and applicable standards, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Applying your analytical abilities in prioritization, you will assess submissions and communications and prioritize or escalate based on the significance of the information as appropriate to the Manager.
  • Drawing on your experience in process improvement, you will assist the Manager in monitoring, assessing, and updating Research Ethics Program and Research Ethics Board-associated manuals, processes, forms, and documentation to ensure compliance with applicable policies, standards, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Using your organizational and planning skills, you will assist with the scheduling and preparation for Research Ethics Board meetings, including calendar invitations, agendas, reviewer assignments, and travel arrangements.
  • Harnessing your attention to detail in documentation, you will attend Research Ethics Board meetings, draft meeting minutes distilling complex discussions, consolidating key oral and written comments, recommendations, and concerns, and draft memos to researchers.
  • Building on your interpersonal communication skills, you will build and sustain positive working relationships with stakeholders and team members.

Desired education and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, research ethics, health administration or relevant field of study from a recognized academic institution. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of three years of research administration experience or in coordinating research studies with human participants with demonstrated experience working with research study documentation (e.g. application forms, protocols, consent forms) preferably within a health-research environment.
  • Sound knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing research and research ethics in Canada.
  • Previous experience working within a research ethics office is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills and strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information and to act with tact and discretion.
  • A sound knowledge of MS365 including MSWord, Excel, Outlook.
  • Knowledge of data tracking and reporting, and performance measures is an asset.
  • Scientific literacy is required: Familiarity with reading research protocols and scientific literature.
