Job description: SUMMARYReporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the incumbent is responsible for performing all fire suppression activities required to save life and property. This includes fighting, extinguishing and preventing the spread of fires for the City by quickly and efficiently performing the various tasks required in emergency situations, and assisting other cities as needed; responding to medical emergencies and providing assistance and performing rescue and extrication operations as required to prevent loss of life and injury from any cause; and participating in the department’s training programs and public awareness projects.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond immediately to emergency calls
- Drive and/or operate fire-fighting equipment
- Control and extinguish fires using manual and mechanical equipment (axes, hoses, swing ladders, hydraulic equipment and various fire-fighting chemicals)
- Wear respiratory protection and safety gear in noxious and smoke-filled environments
- Ventilate buildings and areas to remove heat, smoke and gases
- Rescue victims from burning buildings and accident sites
- Inspect, clean, maintain and utilize emergency response equipment and systems
- Check devices and equipment for readiness
- Perform a variety of tasks aimed at protecting the public following accidents of lower severity involving motor vehicles, industrial incidents, hazardous materials, confined spaces, or water and ice rescues
- Be part of an emergency response team and provide paramedical care to injured or sick people
- Assist the public, police and emergency response organizations in the event of a disaster
- Participate in training and certification renewals to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills in line with current professional standards
- Help with the training of other fire department members, if needed
- Lead occasional guided tours of the fire station and participate in fire prevention awareness projects
- Maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness and mental acuity required to perform the work
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation
- High school diploma or equivalent
- IFSAC certification or equivalent (firefighter, level 2)
Training
- Medical first responder
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), level C
Experience
- At least three years’ experience in direct fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents and rescue activities at the municipal level, or other experience deemed relevant by the municipality
Special requirements
- Driver’s license, class 3E
- Driver/operator
- Acceptable driving record
- Minimum age of 19
- Medical certificate of fitness
- Clean criminal record check
Knowledge
- Ability to speak and write in French and English
- Knowledge of fire prevention methods, techniques, codes, laws and regulations
- Knowledge of fire hazards and fire-fighting techniques
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
