This involves working with campus stakeholders, coordinating the tracking and reporting of key quantitative and qualitative metrics and developing, maintaining and improving sustainability programs and initiatives. The department also ensures that UWinnipeg continues to address local and global sustainability challenges. The Campus Sustainability Coordinator is a full-time continuing position responsible for ensuring the department fulfills its mandate.Responsibilities:

  • Manages Sustainability staff in the development and implementation of programs and initiatives, leads working groups, oversees project teams and student employees.
  • Measures and evaluates program success, working with stakeholders to identify and track appropriate indicators.
  • Seeks out and secures funding from various government, foundation and industry sources to support sustainability activities and initiatives.
  • Works on the administration of contracts and day to day operation of the University’s recycling and composting programs.
  • Supervises the design of educational workshops and the production of support materials that increase awareness and participation in sustainability initiatives.
  • Develops and supports knowledge, initiative, and interest in campus sustainability among staff, students and faculty
  • Develops and maintains a systematic approach for student engagement, develops experiential learning and volunteer opportunities.
  • Offers guest lectures to various university courses related to sustainability.
  • Coordinates the Green Office Program.
  • Works with the Academic Working group to expand sustainability education across academic departments.
  • Maintain knowledge of current issues and trends relating to the environment and campus sustainability, informs senior leadership of information relevant to the University’s broader goals and projects.
  • Oversees and/or conducts research in support of sustainability goals and initiatives undertakes independent research projects.
  • Prepares and edits sustainability reports/documents.
  • Shapes and delivers internal messaging, serves as the campus spokesperson on sustainability issues.
  • Speaks on behalf of the University to external groups and functions, represents the University at professional conferences and local events related to sustainability.
  • Builds partnerships with local organizations.
  • Interfaces with counterparts at other institutions.
  • Oversees the development and updates to the Sustainability website
  • Writes a variety of papers regarding University Sustainability work aimed at raising the profile of Campus Sustainability efforts and initiatives
  • Strategize in developing and implementing plans and initiatives that support the University’s sustainability performance.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to departments to support the development of concrete sustainability goals, initiatives and work plans.
  • Coordinates, supports and advises the University’s strategic planning process on sustainability considerations.
  • Acts as a sustainability advocate on campus and develops administrative and management mechanisms to ensure due-diligence, transparency and accountability.
  • Advises and supports operational departments responsible for core environmental performance management practices.
  • Coordinates the reporting of the University’s environmental and emissions performance to third party rating systems (The Climate Registry, STARS), ensures that reporting methodologies and data collection practices reflect best practices.
  • Establishes and tracks performance measures to mark progress against targets using a variety of indicators for a wide range of programs.
  • Work with operational departments to maintain and improves indicator reporting templates.
  • Coordinates annual sustainability reporting process with sustainability staff and other University actors; lead analysis and writing of the annual report, and the communication of findings.
  • Sit on committees for new capital projects to ensure sustainability elements and requirements are incorporated.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related discipline (e.g. Sustainability, Environmental Studies etc.).
  • At least 2 years of directly related experience at a coordinating level.
  • Significant sustainability related experience – leading a similar program/department is highly desirable.
  • Ability to lead teams, influence others, implement change and coach a wide variety of colleagues required.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be able to work effectively with a wide range of personalities and varying sizes of committees and groups.
  • Must be able to reason through problems, issues and scenarios, to a sound conclusion.
  • Must be capable of working with multiple simultaneous priorities to successful accomplishment.
  • Knowledge of sustainability concepts from social, ecological and economic perspectives, and an understanding of local and global challenges and solutions.
  • Must be capable of providing technical as well as operational leadership to the campus community on sustainability.
  • Must be capable of developing broad and effective relationships with all levels within the organization and in the broader community.
  • Must be an experienced and persuasive public speaker; comfortable in speaking to any size or kind of group.
  • Must be a self-starter who can work under minimum supervision.
  • Must be tactful and diplomatic.
  • Must develop a peer network outside of the institution to assist with maintaining current knowledge base in functional areas.
  • Knowledge of LEED and/or other green building standards an asset.
  • Demonstrated mathematical abilities an asset for effective annual reporting of various sustainability indicators and developing mathematical reporting spreadsheets to make reporting more efficient.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database and excel-based computer applications an asset.
  • Ability to develop project and funding proposals required.
  • Must have the stamina to maintain a hectic work schedule, with the ability to juggle multiple complex projects simultaneously.
