Job description: Do you have experience enforcing building codes, reviewing building permit applications and performing building/plumbing inspections? If so, we want you on our Development Services Team!As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for enforcing building associated acts, and related RDCO bylaws by reviewing applications, granting building permits, performing building and plumbing inspections, and responding to public inquires. Your thorough knowledge of the BC Building and Plumbing Codes is essential when reviewing building permit applications, performing building/plumbing inspections and responding to public enquiries.You will: * Interpret Building Codes and related bylaw issues with the public including owners, trades people, and Registered Professionals.
- Review building permit applications for compliance with Building Codes, related bylaws, standards, and regulations.
- Organize daily inspections for most efficient and accommodating route to satisfy both customer timing and inspector efficiency.
- Review plans and conduct building inspections as per BOABC Level I certification (single family residences and secondary suites) in accordance with building bylaw requirements by making decisions about compliance with Building Codes and related bylaws.
- Enforce compliance with building codes and related bylaws:
- Monitor inspection areas for building activity.
- Issue Stop Work Orders, Removal Orders and/or Demolition orders.
- Recommend bylaw contravention notices be placed on property titles.
- Attend public related complaints and implement required resolutions.
- Coordinate building activity:
- Create and maintain accurate records of inspection decisions.
- Communicate inspection decisions with building owners, Registered Professionals, and trades people (as required).
- Monitor current files for scheduled inspections and deficiency corrections.
- Grant approval for use once all permit conditions have been satisfied.
- Support Business licensing including intercommunity business license program:
- Ensure business operations comply with relevant zoning and building bylaws.
- Site visits.
- Advertising and Bylaw updates.
- Collaborate with other Building Inspectors in delivering inspection services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Our ideal candidate is someone with 2 years experience in building and plumbing inspection, sustainable building standards (preferably within local government regulation), Level 1 BOABC and POABC Certification, as well as a journeyman level certificate in a related trade. Excellent communication skills are required to convey necessary information to public, professionals, and staff. Proficiency in MS Office as well as working experience in computer data base software such as Vadim would be an asset. A valid BC Driver’s License with record of safe driving is essential.This is a 6-month term CUPE 338 position that works part time, between 14 – 28 hours per week. A flexible schedule is available to accommodate the needs of the employee, with standard working hours being Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Occasional flexibility around these standard hours may be needed for operational needs.
