Job description: The Opportunity:Company, Department: Nova Scotia Power, Power ProductionLocation: Tufts Cove Generating Station-Dartmouth, NSType of Employment: Temporary, full-time (term)Salary: $37.34 per hour, as per the NSPI/IBEW Collective AgreementClosing Date: January 12th, 2025Note: This is a term position with an expected end date of October 31st, 2025We are currently looking to fill 5 positions for an Auxiliary Power Engineer (Term) to join our Power Production team in a temporary position. Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, you will be responsible for all aspects of the safe and cost-efficient operation of the high-pressure boiler turbine unit(s) and all associated auxiliary equipment.Key elements of this role include::As an Auxiliary Power Engineer (Term):

  • You must be able to work effectively as a member of the Power Production Operations Team and be capable of functioning in a planned work environment.
  • You will be required to participate in competency-based training, regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will work on an as required basis within the confines of the NSPI/IBEW Collective Agreement.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • You will be responsible for solid environmental performance of the plant and support all ISO 14001 processes and initiatives. We encourage that you participate as a member of the Emergency Response.
  • You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • It is the responsibility of the Auxiliary Power Engineer to ensure that NSPI is in compliance with all NERC/NPCC reliability standards related to Power Production.

Your primary residence must be located within 60 minutes of headquarters, and you may be required to respond to call-outs.This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure. These skills will make you successful::You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • A 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Power Engineer in a generating station or industry with similar processes are required.
  • You will be required to demonstrate acceptable color vision for operation of control monitoring equipment. You have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • If no qualified candidates apply, applicants who possess a 3rd Class Power Engineer Certificate or are currently enrolled in the final year of a 3rd Class Power Engineering program will be considered as Power Engineer Apprentices. As a registered apprentice, you will be responsible to complete all papers and skills required to successfully obtain your 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate within a specific time frame.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Must be able to lift 10-25 lbs. from the floor to overhead on an occasional basis and carry 50 lbs. with two hands
  • Able to push and pull 95 lbs. with whole body strength and 145 lbs. using upper body strength on a minimal basis
  • Perform tasks using a range of grip strength frequently and perform static reaching from waist level on a frequent basis and from laterally to overhead on an occasional basis
  • Perform bending, stooping, kneeling, and forward flexional movements on a minimal basis
  • Perform squatting, crouching, neck rotation, neck extension and finger dexterity occasionally
  • Possess the ability use side neck flexion, stand, and climb ladders and stairs frequently while walking constantly
  • Must be able to sit constantly, using frequent finger dexterity while using minimal grip strength
  • Perform frequent static reaching at waist level and occasional reaching from below the waist to shoulder height
  • Perform minimal bending, stopping, and forward flexion
  • Use neck extensions and rotations occasionally and using side neck flexion frequently to complete tasks throughout the shift
