This position offers the flexibility to be in-office or participate in hybrid options in our Saskatoon or Regina office.

Reporting directly to the Manager, Underwriting, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective day to day operations of the Group Underwriters unit within the Underwriting department. This includes coordination of workflow both within the Group Underwriting department as well as with other Departments within the company. The Team Lead, Senior Group Underwriter ensures performance standards and efficiency levels are maintained while keeping corporate vision, goals, and objectives in mind. This position oversees the work of direct reports, including the performance management and coaching, and participates in the hiring, selection, and onboarding processes.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete risk assessment and pricing on cases requiring escalation
  • Participate in annual audit of cases and file documentation to ensure adherence to Underwriting guidelines
  • Advise and approve final rate action as required on cases exceeding the Underwriting authority limits of team members under the direct supervision of the Manager
  • First level of review for sales disputes, participate at lifeline discussions as required
  • Provide justification or recommendation by completing thorough case analysis
  • Review quotes/renewals/revisions as necessary to ensure rating guidelines and parameters have been adhered to
  • Assess cases which are deemed as outside the authority level of the assigned Underwriter
  • Work directly with the Manager of Underwriting in determining authority levels for each specific Underwriter
  • Provide day to day direction / supervision of team members which includes participating in the recruitment, training, coaching, development, and performance management
  • Work with team members to develop performance goals aligned to strategic, operational and engagement goals; support overall effectiveness and in consultation with the Manager, address obstacles as they arise
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight on operational activities to ensure adherence to standard operating procedures, key deliverables, and achievement of key performance metrics
  • Support the Manager in the planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting of department work plans
  • Assist the Manager in identifying and regularly reviewing KPI’s, preparing or facilitating required reporting, analyzing data, and identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities
  • Other related projects and duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e., Finance, Commerce, Mathematics, Economics), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required
  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related Underwriting experience within the insurance industry
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation is required
  • Working knowledge of Life/Accident/Sickness insurance, as well as Health and Dental benefits
  • Familiarity with and adherence to Saskatchewan Employment Legislation
  • Strong leadership skills, including motivating, developing, coaching, and leading teams
  • Effective working knowledge of Microsoft 365 with the ability to understand and learn new systems
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to all external stakeholders and Saskatchewan Blue Cross staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven organizational skills and the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects and tasks with competing deadlines
  • Ability to use sound judgement to make good decisions based on information gathered and analyzed
  • Excellent organizational, research, and analytical skills with the ability to summarize information into reports and other documents
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada on an unrestricted basis
  • Criminal Record and background check satisfactory to Saskatchewan Blue Cross
