Job title: Health Record Technician

Job description: The Health Record Technician will report to the Assistant Manager, Projects and Administration and will be primarily responsible for processing electronic medical records. The incumbent will ensure the accuracy and completeness of records used within the hospital and College for a variety of clinical, teaching, research and administrative purposes. The medical record is a legal document and the privacy and confidentiality of clients and patients must be maintained.The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing medical records for completeness including discrepancies, omissions, errors and appropriate approvals; direct deficient records to the responsible clinician for completion; monitor, report and follow up on incomplete records
  • Compiling medical record with supporting documentation, converting to electronic format and assigning appropriate diagnostic coding
  • Assisting clinicians, students, researchers, administrative staff and other health professionals in retrieving health information from the Health Information Management System (HIMS) database and reporting dashboards
  • Responding to release of information requests while adhering to College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) regulations, University of Guelph and OVC HSC policies and procedures and applicable privacy laws
  • Monitoring and ordering medical record supplies and equipment as required

Requirements of the position include:

Technician Helper – Fire Alarm Division
  • One (1) year of Community College in a related program plus one (1) year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) preferred
  • Working knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • General computing literacy
  • Client focus and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with a veterinary hospital setting and working knowledge of Electronic Health Information Management Systems would be considered an asset
